“For You” is a short film I shot for director Ryan Knight in early January. A 6min cut of the film has just been posted on DVXuser.com as part of their Lovefest competition. The film was originally inspired by a song and has a very visual, open ended, ambiguous approach allowing the viewer to bestow upon it his or her own experiences.

We shot on an HVX200 and it was the first project that I took through Apple’s Color program for color correction. There is a lot of control and the addition of power windows makes it a powerful tool. I’m looking forward to working with the program further.

We are planning on doing a pickup day in March to re-shoot some scenes that were shot on a DVX for the purposes of making the deadline for the competition.

I’ve tweaked the coding on the “demo” page of barrycheong.com that will hopefully improve stability with loading clips from the individual project section.

Also, Quicktime will only allow one clip at a time to load so please allow a clip to finish loading before attempting to load another clip - for example allowing the montage reel to finish loading before any of the individual clips will load. I’m researching to see if there’s a way to code it so it can load multiple clips at a time.

So due to the 15-20 cm of snow that was dumped on Toronto and surrounding area last night and today, “The Key”, that I was to shoot tomorrow for Tony Felgueiras has been pushed to a later date.

The extra time should allow me to do a few more lighting tests and mull over the look some more. We’ve been referencing various paintings which feature a low key lighting look and chiaroscuro effect. In particular, Caravaggio’s “Vocazione di S. Matteo”, for it’s color palette, quality of light and mood that it conveys.
