Sony XD-CAM EX Testing

barry | gear | Tuesday, October 14th, 2008

Did a test day with the Sony EX1/EX3 with fellow cameraman Ken Ng. Tested different gammas, under/over exposure, contrast ratios, etc. Still have to sit down and analyze the results.

We put Ken’s Canon 11×4.7 wide angle lens on the EX3 which can take an adapter to mount 2/3″ lenses on the 1/2″ chip body. This EX3 had a support modification by Joe Sutherland’s in Toronto. The overall rig wasn’t too bad - still a little front heavy. Ken’s waist support helped alleviate some of that.

We also tested the EX3 with a SG-Pro adapter from camera guy Rhydon who came by with his rig. We put a couple of his Nikon primes up and again tested the rig for handheld use.

Overall the EX series cameras are really nice. I’ve been a Panasonic guy for while and I almost don’t want to like the Sony stuff but both with the EX1 and now the EX3 Sony has really built some great cameras with a really great feature set. The quality of the LCD, colored viewfinder peaking, SxS workflow and an ISO speed of about 500-640 on the EX3 and pushing 800 on an EX1 are some of the big plus factors for me over Panasonic.

Ken testing out the EX3 with his Canon 11×4.7. The lens has a 4:3 cross over which ends up giving you a really wide field of view when engaged. It being a 2/3″ lens to 1/2″ allows you to do this.

With the SG-PRO and EX3. Felt pretty good. The classic viewfinder position on the EX3 make the whole rig manageable for handheld work.

Finished a short for Director Luke Langsdale called Harvey. It’s about a balloon sculptor, Lornicus, who has an imaginary balloon dog friend named Harvey and the conflict that his has with his girlfriend Estelle.

Shot on a Sony F900 mainly using a cine-version Canon 11×4.7 zoom from Sim Video. Lighting & Grip by Affiliated Equipment. Special FX to be completed by Crush Inc.

Dreamland

barry | shorts | Thursday, October 2nd, 2008

Was up in Ottawa shooting a short film for director Glenn McDonald. The story is about a woman, who’s lover, a specialist in the area of dreams, finds himself trapped in the dreamworld and she must kill him in order to set him free.

Shot on the EX-1 camera. A really great camera as far as operation goes - really great feature set and workflow. The peaking function beats the pants off what Panasonic offers on their cameras.

I lit most of the scenes with kino flo’s gelled with Rosco 60 Cyan and Source 4 Leko with gobos for texture. The other locations were fairly run and gun where I only had bounce cards and my Litepanel mini. A Soft FX 1/2 lived on the lens for certain scenes.

Super thanks to Mark Nichols who came up with me from Toronto to help with the lighting and grip and also did sound and a million other things!
