Wanted to post a few select screen caps from Inside. These were taken from 1024×576 Pro-Res rushes, cropped to 1.85:1 and a little bit of CC in Photoshop. The Pro-res files were made from 4K 16:9 files at Redcode36.

Finished shooting “Inside” for Yaz Rabadi. Didn’t have any time to take any pictures but I have a few pics to post from sound recordist Kirill Belousov. Maybe more will surface at some point.
The schedule was really hectic and each of the 4 days we had A LOT to cover to get our day. I’m glad I was shooting on RED which allowed me to get images I’m happy with considering how ridiculously fast we had to move. Overall I’m really happy with my first experience with the camera.
Some quick tech info - Shot most of the scenes with daylight after reading about the camera noise issues with tungsten. For practicality, I shot 2 scenes with tungsten lights with camera balance at 4200 or 4400 K (can’t remember now) which will be remain warm at the color correct stage. For a few scenes I played a 1/8 or 1/4 Black Pro Mist - which I really liked. I was hoping to get Soft FX but BPM became the only option at the last moment. Lenses were Zeiss Superspeeds and I generally shot them at 2-2.8 @ ISO 320.
Much thanks to my hard working crew - Gaffer Mike Armstrong, Key Grip Adam Crosby, respective Best Boys - Anya Shor and Peter Dreimanis, 1st AC Paul Vilchur and 2nd AC Tess Garneau.
Camera: RED One - 4K 16:9, Aspect: 1.85:1, 2K 16:9 (hi speed work). Camera by Charles Street Video.

Lining up our first shot on our first day. Director Yaz Rabadi to my left, Focus Paul Vilchur (in hat) standing by and Key Grip Adam Crosby (in green) by the dolly.
Taking a quick breather between handheld setups to line up a shot on the ground. Handheld was not fun in the config that I had the camera in. Next time I’ll have to insist on getting additional CF cards instead of shooting to the drives.
Finished the last pickup day for “Test Drive” Mazda spot. Did some interesting car rigging including to our Mazda 3 picture car and to the hood of our chase vehicle to get a shot from behind of the Mazda 3. Nice ride!
I just recently purchased a whole bunch of different parts from accessories company Zacuto. I’ve been looking at their stuff for a little while now and have always found their philosophy about gear fits similarly to mine - buy into versatility. The wonderful thing with Zacuto gear is that it’s truly universal and you can mix and match parts and use it for an infinite number of applications on any camera system.
One of my more recent additions was the ZRED Zwivel adapter for the RED camera. I just finished my first shoot with the RED and after assessing the Noga-type arm that RED uses as their stock mount I knew that I would be constantly cursing if I had to use that for the duration of the shoot. The ZRED Zwivel amount was affordable and looked like it was would do the trick. For tripod and dolly configuration it works really well mounted to the top rod of the RED and the ability to slide it back and forth on this rod allows a lot of flexibility especially for dolly work. Handheld was a little trickier to figure out. When mounted on the top rod the EVF was mounted a little too high and forced me to strain my neck to get my eye into the eyepiece. After about 45min of tinkering with all my extra Zacuto bits (again great versatility) I managed to figure out another configuration so I could quick release the EVF from tripod/dolly use to a lower handheld position. I ended up using the 19mm crossbar on their Z-Grips Beefy system to the get right position. It’s otherwise difficult to get the EVF mounted close to the body and not have your mounting hardware bang into it. I used a Male Zud and Female Zud coupled together instead of the standard 4″ rod on the Zwivel to reduce the profile.
Top and bottom mounts for the RED EVF.
RED camera (from Charles Street Video) tricked out with my Zacuto gear. Zwivel adapter, Quick-Released monitor off Zicromount III and Z-Grips Beefy (handgrips not mounted).
Thanks to Mike Wilder at Image Gear in Toronto for the speedy order in time for my shoot.

Just got some pictures from Art Director Kevin Konnyu from Day 1 of Mazda. Day 1 we spent mainly inside the dealership shooting around a Mazda 3 for the “Test Drive” spot. I played 2x 1200’s bouncing into a 6×6 frame of white griff and a 575 backlight with Kino’s for close up work.

My friends at Exploding Motor Car just released a really small teaser for the music video I finished shooting for them for the band Ohbijou. It doesn’t reveal too much but I’m probably just as excited as anyone else too see the finished version.
Shot a 2nd day of a commercial for the Erin Mills Mazda dealership. We were originally slated to shoot the commercial over a weekend but weather caused production to call off the first day due to rain so we went back to shoot additional coverage in the parking lot of the dealership.
Turns out it rained this day as well so we still have another 1/2 day! The extra 1/2 day will be shooting some car mount stuff of a Mazda 3 driving around a neighborhood. I’m scheduled to do this sometime in early July.
I shot using an HVX200 with Redrock M2 adapter w/ Nikon glass.

Shooting our lead Sabrina under the convenience of a tent while it was pouring outside. We were framing XCU’s and detail work inside the car so you couldn’t tell.
Spent my Canada day pulling all my gear for a short titled Inside I’m starting for director Yaz Rabadi. The short is about a man who’s become disillusioned with his life, his job, and his family and he starts having these disturbing fantasies about his own reality.
We’re shooting the short over 4 days all in practical locations in Toronto. We’re employing the RED One camera which will be my first time shooting with it, but I have a strong team around me that have all used the camera before. Package is coming from Charles Street Video with additionals from PS, Image Gear and ZTV broadcast.
Lighting and Grip by barrycheong.com with a good handful of additionals + dolly from Mike Armstrong at Black Collar Films who’s also my gaffer on the show.
